| Compulsive coping is when we repeatedly do something in order to cope with a situation or feeling. Let us take comfort food as an example. If I learned from a young age that chocolate or ice cream make me feel better when I am sad, then I’m going to start eating chocolate every time I need to feel better. This pattern gets reinforced over time. Now as an adult, I still lean on chocolate to help me cope. The problem is that I now eat over ten bars of chocolate a day and my health is suffering, and because I never deal with my problems (eating chocolates is a way of avoiding pain, not processing it) I find that chocolate is becoming less effective as a coping mechanism. |
Day 1 – You’re Still His
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
God doesn’t disown you in your weakness. He draws closer.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- What was I really needing when I acted out or felt overwhelmed?
- What do I fear God might think of me right now?
- What does Scripture say is actually true about how He sees me?
- If I could hear His voice right now, what would I want Him to say?
Day 2 – Your Body Is Not the Enemy
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
Exhaustion, illness, and lack of sleep affect your emotions. This is not spiritual failure—this is being human.
“Elijah… lay down under the bush and fell asleep… the angel said, ‘Get up and eat.’” – 1 Kings 19:5-6
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- Where have I ignored or pushed past my physical limits recently?
- How has lack of rest or sickness made it harder to resist temptation or emotional lows?
- What would it look like to treat my body like a vessel worthy of care, not shame?
- God, what would You say to me about rest?
Day 3 – Temptation Doesn’t Define You
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
Temptation reveals a need—not an identity. Acting out isn’t who you are.
“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses…” – Hebrews 4:15
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- What deeper need was my temptation trying to meet?
- How have I confused “what I did” with “who I am”?
- What truth do I need to speak over my identity today?
- God, what do You want to heal under the surface?
Day 4 – Grace Resets the Cycle
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
God’s grace doesn’t just cover the past. It resets your direction.
“His mercies are new every morning.” – Lamentations 3:23
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- What would it look like to receive mercy fully today?
- How do I usually punish myself emotionally after I fall?
- What new rhythm could I put in place to interrupt the cycle next time?
- God, show me what “starting again with You” looks like today.
Day 5 – You Weren’t Made to Do This Alone
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
God designed healing to happen in relationship, not isolation.
“Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” – James 5:16
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- Who can I talk to when I feel overwhelmed or tempted?
- What holds me back from reaching out in those moments?
- What has happened in the past when I let someone in?
- God, who do You want to walk with me in this season?
Day 6 – You’re Still Called
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
Your calling didn’t disappear when you fell. God is still writing your story.
“The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” – Romans 11:29
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- What do I feel called to do or become?
- How does shame try to silence or disqualify me?
- What would it look like to lead or serve from a place of brokenness and grace?
- God, what part of my calling do You want to reignite?
Day 7 – You’re Safe to Be Loved
🧠 Fact to Contemplate:
Healing doesn’t require perfection. It requires safety. And you are safe in God’s love.
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…” – 1 John 4:18
✍️ Journal Prompts:
- Where do I still feel afraid to be fully seen?
- How have I associated God’s love with performance?
- What would change if I truly believed I was safe in love—even at my worst?
- God, what do You want to say to the parts of me that still hide?
